You Become What You Think About Most Of The Time!

When faced with intrusive thoughts that plague your mind, what do you do? Whether the thought is unreasonable, unkind, unhealthy or just distracting, here are four ideas that help you think better.

1) Avoid Suppression & Pay Attention

Dwelling on any negative thought is self-destructive and won't make you feel better. Sometimes, however, you fight so hard to suppress unwanted thoughts that you forget to replace them with better ones. 

Suppressing any thought is psychologically damaging and if that's all you do, you are doomed to fail over the longer-term. In fact, the opposite to your intention to suppress generally occurs! As you try not to think about something, you'll notice it tends to become all you think about? That naughty but nice piece of cake; that 'last' cigarette before giving up for good; the company of people who seem to get you into trouble; the images you know you should not be watching. 

That's why it's essential you examine the source of your thinking!

2) Recognising Triggers

Everything that surrounds you exerts a force in your life. Sometimes bad things just happen when you are an innocent bystander. But doing your conscious best to recognize the things that trigger unhelpful thoughts refocuses your stimuli. And by definition, this includes avoiding certain relationships, places, activities, groups, books, films, songs and more. 

When you replace the triggers to bad thinking with good thoughts, better choices appear!

3) The Practice Of Mindfulness (*Karma)

Unrelated thoughts that have nothing at all to do with what you are doing at any given moment is how the human mind works ~ randomly. Unwanted thoughts occur in the abstract of your mind because of what you've allowed into it in the past, and dwelling upon them too much can lead to depression;. 

Mindfulness is the practice of Paying Attention To-Who-You-Are; of living in the present; of savoring every moment; of believing in your becoming and, at first, this takes sustained effort. In the 2004 film "The Last Samurai" the credo of the Samurai Chiefton was, "A lifetime in every breath" and that's the goal for every human being who wants to achieve better thinking.

Acts Of Mindfulness Include:

Pausing frequently to reflect on why you're thinking what you’re thinking, and immediately dismissing any negative thought without further argument

Expressing gratitude at the end of each day for those people who are important to you and for the good choices you've made for others and yourself

Accepting any negative event or situation outside of your control with the grace to carry on, carrying on

Focusing on doing something very simple ~ this very moment ~ to further your end-game

4) Adding Light

Daily habits, such as those described above, keep your mind from inappropriately wandering from the essential things that keep intrusive thoughts in perspective. Instead of fighting with your dark moments, focus on shining your light on them, remembering the words of The Bard, William Shakespeare, “Our doubts are traitors that make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt”.
