Are Moods Contagious?
Some people believe ‘reality’ is that this world sucks! Others believe it’s good to be alive!
So, who’s right?
Research affirms that if you perpetually hang around people renting their clothes, uttering woe is me, don’t be surprised if you start getting emotionally down, too. Is it mere coincidence that Medical Doctors have the highest rate of suicide?
Conversely, if you spend your precious time with those of a sunnier disposition, you are likely to feel ‘sunnier’.
It’s not rocket science but your desires, your beliefs and your expectations seed and evolve from the people you spend most of your time with.
So if you want to be a success in your chosen career, learn from those who are the most uplifting (and this doesn't necessarily mean those who earn the most money!)
Henry Ford put it this way, “Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can’t ~ you’re right”. And, the first record of this mind-over-matter principle is written in the 7th-century BC book of Proverbs Chapter 23, Verse 7.
Did you know ~ there is an accelerating number of Students suffering from depression ~ dwelling too much in the past ~ or anxiety, fearing too much about the future? And it doesn’t stop at Students! A whopping 7-out-of-10 adults say what they do for a living is disagreeable.
History ~ the idea that emotion 'infects’ whole groups of people isn’t new. More than 2-centuries ago, a suicide epidemic occurred in Europe. Most victims were linked to having read one particular book by Johann von Goethe [I won’t mention the title], in which the hero commits suicide.
To stop the suicides, the book was banned and a subsequent study published in The Journal of Memetics reported:
“During the two hundred years that have followed the publication and subsequent censorship of Goethe’s novel, social scientific research has largely confirmed the thesis that affects, attitudes, beliefs and behaviour can indeed spread through populations as if they were somehow infectious.”
Remember, it doesn’t take much mixing of black paint to turn white paint grey! So be careful whom you hang around with.
