What Is Your Sound Of Silence?
'The Sound Of Silence', was released by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel in 1964 ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAEppFUWLfc
Simon and Garfunkel's first of many number one hits, resonated with the silence of solitude; I want to change the emphasis to the silence of understanding.
Don't Wait To Speak
Many people have never learned to listen! They interrupt when someone is speaking with little thought of what is actually being said, suffering the inevitable consequence of misunderstanding.
Games People Play
At the time Simon & Garfunkel were celebrating their first number one hit, American Psychiatrist Eric Berne, published a best-selling book. ‘Games People Play’ (recommended reading) introduced Berne's concept of Transactional Analysis as a way of interpreting social interactions that recognise how human ego can get in the way of effective communication. He identified three responses: the Parent, the Adult, and the Child (PAC).
In short ~ when you fail to shut-up and seek to understand what someone is trying to communicate, you damage any mutually beneficial outcome, behaving either like a domineering parent, or a child having a tantrum.
Your sound of silence demonstrates a mature (adult) posture as you truly strive to understand what is being communicated. Should you disagree with what you have just heard, doing so agreeably (adult) also demonstrates your emotional maturity!
So, the next time you are thinking more about what you want to say, rather than paying attention to what is being said, STOP!
As Stephen R. Covey counselled, ‘Seek 1st To Understand, Then To Be Understood’.
